Well, its not all that far fetched ... I drove 168kms from Niagara Fall
N.Y back to my house in Toronto Canada, and I kept staying behind big
S.U.V's, minivans and Trailer trucks. Total consumption of gas for that
trip was 6.6liters ... thats 25.45km\liter or almost 60mpg. Mind you
this was on my '92 Civic Si Hatchback (1.6 VTEC) with 282000kms.

Keep in mind I've only been able to average 11.5km\liter for the last
30000kms, so yea, I had to check at the odometer, gas tank guage and
receipt 3 times to be sure I'm not seeing things. :-)

I cruised on an average of 110~120km\hr, and kept the acceleration and
deceleration to a minimum, but when it was time to get moving, I slowly
eased into the throttle. If anyone knew me, they'd know that this is
NOT my normal driving habits, but oh man, the results was just mind
boggling. :-)

I'll be trying to duplicate this test again in the next few weeks, but
it sure would be amazing if I can come close to it. :D

Only mods on the car is an intake and cat-back ... yet to install the
header and hi-flow cat, but I really doubt it''ll affect my mileage.

It DOES burn a quart of oil every 1500~2000kms though.

How will you get 70-80MPG?

Sorry, but if gas hits $10/gal you probably won't be driving the Miata.
Spending $3000 to mod your Miata to get 40MPG isn't a very good game
plan. I mentioned something about an upcoming project in the "how much
is this turbo car worth" thread. My project, if it ever gets off the
ground, will be a 70-80 MPG car. I guess the cat is out of the bag
now...

BTW, doubling my 20 MPG to 40 MPG would save me around $400 a year (fuel
- additional taxes, insurance, etc). This is if I purchased an economy
beater and kept the other cars I have. High MPG doesn't give you a huge
cost savings unless gas prices really go up. My boss bought some oil
stocks as his hedge against high gas prices. The rational is anything
extra he spends at the pump is offset by return on investment. Sounds
like an OK idea to me.

With $7 - $10 gas predicted, need choices.

thx
