I was recently having a similar problem. It seemed like the TPS was ok and I
would get the * but sometimes it would take a while to show up. I noticed the
throttle damper had a torn boot on it and testing it I found it was real
sticky. replaced the throttle damper and the problem went away. The other
problem it would cause is when I was rolling down off throttle in high vacuume
in the fuel cut if I pushed in the clutch the engine would die.

TPS signal is ok. The * is there at idle and goes away as soon as I touch
the pedal. It comes back after blipping the throttle, so TPS should be ok.
I checked all lines and found no vacuum leaks.
Cleaned both grounds on the RH side of the engine. Didn't do the one near
the dipstick as it was a tad too hot there Will do so next week (leaving for
a Disney weekend in the morning).

It never goes in row 2 when this is happening. Blip the throttle and 2 out
of 3 times, it goes to 2K rpm and just hangs in zone 115.
When I blip the throttle and it does come down, it drops to 1500 rpm, goes
back up to 2K, hangs there for a second or 2 and then falls back to 1500 and
than slowly to normal idle.

Other thing I noticed is that just touching the accelerator makes it go up to
2K all by itself. Sometimes it comes back down, sometimes it doesn't ...

Fuel zones at idle are set according to the manual and have worked fine since
I bought the ECU, about 6-7 years ago or so, Bill?

BTW Bill, are there still chips available for this ECU?
