I leased a condo for a year while looking for property and building my
current house. The entire lawn was common area and cared for by a
contractor. During that year two of the ornamental shrubs in front of
the condo died. The HOA contacted me to replace the plants. I
questioned the mandate and then contacted the owner (the builder).
Both HOA and builder insisted that I was responsible to meet all HOA
rules... so I was ordered to replace the shrubs. I replaced the shrubs with several small sweet potato plants and then dutifully groomed them over the summer. Midway through the summer I received compliments on how beautiful the replacement plants were. I simply smiled, and in the fall I harvested my crop of sweet potatoes. HOA president lived in my cul de sac and eyed me as I dug up the flower bed to retrieve my bounty. By this time my house was completed and I moved out. The potatoes were delicious. I dislike HOAs.
