Since the aged bushings are much harder than new ones, I would replace both inner bushings on that control arm, or find a similarly aged one to just replace the one.
If you don't you may incur unintended toe changes during cornering or accel/deccel due to the bushing duromenter difference. Kind of like the dynamic toe-in Mazda designed into the rear lower outer bushings. ----- Original Message ----- From: Stephen Rigley To: Bill Cardell Cc: MiataPower Sent: Saturday, March 21, 2009 9:37 AM Subject: Re: wandering/loose Roadster Went for an alignment this morning (have replaced the safety washers). 2 alignment bolts snapped and one started spinning the tube in the lower rear drivers side A-arm. Gah! So, do I replace one bush with OEM, or all on that A-arm or ..? I don't have time to replace all bushings at the moment. Thanks! Wow.. the difference... the steering has never been this good as long as I've had the car... really silky smooth. The passenger side inner was very loose in the ball socket. Gah.. gotta go back in there with new safety washers from the dealer soon, the inner tabs on mine kinda got a bit mashed. Many thanks for the pointers! You need to pull the boot in the picture up to see if the play is in the joint under the boot or maybe the bolt is loose. This should be pretty easy to isolate with just wiggling things. I wouldn't buy any parts until you narrow it down. There is about 150k miles on the car. Heh no, not replaced the bushings.. I say 10+ as I've had the car 10 years since Monday ;-) Right.. will order inner tierods, no harm in changing them now anyway whether worn yet or not. Have just been out to the car to have another look with a spare pair of arms to help me, def some slack (about 2mm) in the steering shaft to steering rack joint, is there adjustment available here? Pic of the RHD joint attached, not sure if LHD is the same. Bushings... *draws air in through teeth*.. hmm.. thats a whole new thread, I'll get back to you when I've done some more research. ;-) Thanks again! How many miles? PS Have you ever replaced the suspension bushings? Are the inners prone to wear? Thanks! Steve On Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 3:44 PM, Bill Cardell <[email protected]> wrote: Rob has a good idea, throw a wrench on all the alignment adjusters. They'd have to be really loose to feel play by hand. I'd vote for inner tie rod ends. Have someone shake the wheels while you feel inner ends through the boots.
