OK, according to this new diagram the engine fuse feeds the SRS (airbag) diagnostic module. That would explain the original problem. The airbag light has been flashing for a while, sometimes erratically. I dunno if the SRS diagnostic module can cause power surges that make the tach twitch, but I will find out. I don't know why the weenies at Haynes had to leave that subsystem diagram out of their repair manual but they did (probably some lawyer and liability thing).
