1941 – Ernest Tubb records "Walking The Floor Over You," "Our Baby's
Book," "When The World Has Turned You Down," "I'll Always Be Glad To
Take You Back" and "Mean Mama Blues" at Biggs Studio in Dallas, Texas.
1952 – Hank Williams makes his only network television appearance on
The Kate Smith Evening Hour, singing "Hey Good Lookin'."
1955 – The Platters record both songs for what will become their first
hit single, "Only You (And You Alone" and "Bark, Battle And Ball" at
Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
1957 – Harry Belafonte re-signs with his label, RCA, for an
unprecedented $1 million.
1957 – At his second session for Specialty Records, Larry Williams
records what will become his first and biggest hit, "Short Fat
Fannie," and its reverse side "High School Dance," as well as "Iko
Iko," "Hey Now Hey Now" and "Love Charms" at Master Recorders in
Hollywood. The session is produced by Bumps Blackwell, and features
Rene Hall on guitar, Ted Brinson on bass, J.J Jones on sax, Leon Silby
on piano, and Earl Palmer on drums.
1958 – Alan Freed's Big Beat Show plays two shows at the Civic Opera
House in Chicago, featuring Chuck Berry, Danny and The Juniors, The
Pastels, Buddy Holly, Dickie Doo and The Don’ts, Jo Ann Campbell, Ed
Townsend, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers and many
others.
1959 – Edd "Kookie" Burns charts with his song, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend
Me Your Comb."
1960 – Elvis Presley begins filming his fifth movie, G.I. Blues: his
first film since being discharged from the Army.
1962 – Just days after losing his son, Jerry Lee Lewis arrives in
England to begin a 32-date tour: his first time back since he was run
out of the country in 1958 because of his marriage scandal.
1962 – Sam Cooke records the songs for his next single, "Bring It On
Home To Me" and "Having A Party" at RCA Studios in Hollywood.
1962 – Neil Sedaka opens at the Forty Thieves Lounge in Bermuda.
1963 – Frankie Avalon signs on to star in Beach Party, the first of
what will become known as "beach movies."
1963 – Tony Bennett records "This Is All I Ask" at CBS Studios in New
York.
1964 – The Beatles attend a birthday party in London for Roy Orbison,
who turned 28 three days before. In the evening, the group headlines
the New Musical Express Poll Winners concert at the Empire Pool,
Wembley, along with The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark 5, The Hollies,
The Searchers, The Merseybeats, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry and The
Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas, The Joe Loss Orchestra,
Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, Manfred Mann, Jet Harris with Sounds
Incorporated, Kathy Kirby, Big Dee Irwin, and Joe Brown and The

1965 – Bob Dylan arrives in London to perform a handful of concerts in
support of the UK release of his newest album, Bringing It All Back
Home. The tour is documented on film by D.A. Pennebaker.
1966 – The New York Times reports that Ray Charles is undergoing court-
ordered tests in Boston to prove that he is free of heroin.
1966 – The Beatles record "And Your Bird Can Sing."
1967 – CBS airs Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, hosted by Leonard
Bernstein, which features segments about Brian Wilson and Janis Ian,
among others.
1967 – Mama Cass Elliott gives birth to her only child, a daughter,
Owen Vanessa.
1969 – Bob Dylan records “Take Me As I Am (Or Let Me Go),” “A Fool
Such As I,” “I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know,” “Let It Be Me” and
“Running” at RCA Studios in Nashville during sessions for his Self
Portrait album.
1969 – Led Zeppelin performs "Whole Lotta Love" for the first time on

1980 – The Carpenters' fifth TV special, Music, Music, Music, airs on
ABC, featuring guests John Davidson and Ella Fitzgerald.
1980 – The Beat records "Mirror In The Bathroom:" the first digitally
recorded single in the UK.
1982 – Rod Stewart is mugged and robbed of his $50,000 Porsche at
gunpoint in broad daylight on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.
1984 – Mike McCartney unveils a statue of The Beatles by John
Doubleday at the Cavern Walk shopping center.
1988 – A jury in White Plains, New York, finds Mick Jagger innocent of
plagiarism charges brought against him by reggae musician Patrick
Alley for the song "Just Another Night."
1990 – Danny Wood of New Kids On The Block steps on a stuffed animal
thrown on stage by a fan and twists his ankle during their concert in
Manchester, England - injuring his ankle so bad that he his flown back
to the U.S. the next day for treatment.
1990 – Nirvana appears at the Pyramid Club in New York City. The
group’s label films the show. Iggy Pop and members of Sonic Youth are
in the audience.
1992 – The Broadway musical, Jelly's Last Jam, featuring the music of
Jelly Roll Morton, opens at the Virginia Theatre.
1994 – Grace Slick pleads guilty to pointing a shotgun at police who
came to her home on March 5, claiming she was under stress because her
home had burned down the previous year. Slick is sentenced to 200
hours of community service and four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a
week for three months.
1995 – Courtney Love turns down $1 million to pose nude in Playboy.
2003 – The Morgan Creek Bridge in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is re-
named the James Taylor Bridge, in honor of the singer.
2003 – David Cassidy appears as wealthy CEO Everett Price in the "War,
Inc." episode of the CBS show, The Agency.
2004 – June Pointer is arrested in L.A. for felony cocaine possession.
2008 – Amy Winehouse is released from jail after being questioned
about the events of the 23rd, where she injured several people.
