1920 – Quebec radio station XWA begins broadcasting the first
regularly scheduled radio programming in North America.
1941 – Harry James and His Orchestra record "You Made Me Love You" for
Columbia.
1942 – Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, along with Marion Hutton and
The Modernaires, and Tex Beneke on vocals, record “I’ve Got A Gal In
Kalamazoo.”
1954 – Bill Haley and His Comets release their single, "(We're Gonna)
Rock Around The Clock" b/w "Thirteen Women (And Only One Man In
Town)."
1957 – Frank Sinatra records the first of three different versions of
"Witchcraft" at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
1958 – Don Gibson joins the Grand Ole Opry.
1958 – Johnny Cash releases his single, "Guess Things Happen That Way"
b/w "Big River," on Sun Records.
1960 – Johnny Gentle and Long John and The Silver Beetles - with Tommy
Moore on drums - begin their Scottish tour at the Town Hall in Alloa,
Clackmannanshire. Members of the group decide to use stage names
during the tour, with Paul becoming “Paul Ramon,” George adopting
“Carl Harrison,” and Stu Sutcliffe being “Stuart de Stael.”
1960 – The Buddy Holly single, "True Love Ways" b/w "Moondreams," is
released posthumously in the U.S.
1961 – Cliff Richard makes his UK television debut on Thank Your Lucky
Stars.
1964 – Elvis Presley's 15th movie, Viva Las Vegas, premieres in New
York City.
1966 – Keith Moon and John Entwistle are late to a Who gig at the
Ricky Tick Club in Windsor, leaving Townshend and Daltrey to play with
the rhythm section of the opening act. When Keith and John finally
arrive, Pete hits Moon over the head with his guitar. Keith and John
quit the band, but return in a week.
1966 – Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band make their stage debut at
the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.
1966 – Bob Dylan and The Band appear at the ABC Theatre in Edinburgh,
Scotland.
1967 – The Beatles premiere their new album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Hearts Club Band, on Kenny Everett's BBC radio show, Where It's At.
The album is played in its entirety with the exception of “A Day In
The Life,” which has already been banned by the BBC.
1967 – Jimi Hendrix signs with Reprise Records.
1968 – The Beatles gather at George Harrison's home in Esher to record
demos of all the songs that were written while they were in India.
1968 – Pete Townshend marries his first and only wife, Karen Astley.

1968 – David Bowie appears as a dancer in “The Pistol Shot” episode of
the BBC drama series, Theatre 625.
1969 – Led Zeppelin begins three days of recording at A&R Studios in
New York City in an attempt to finish up songs for their next album,
Led Zeppelin II.
1970 – George Harrison meets Phil Spector at Abbey Road studios to
play him some of the songs planned for his first solo album, All
Things Must Pass.
1970 – Badfinger completes the recording of their song “No Matter
What” at Trident Studios in London.
1970 – The Beatles' movie Let It Be premieres in London and Liverpool.
1970 – Peter Green plays his last show with Fleetwood Mac.

1979 – Elton John becomes the first major Western star to perform in
Russia when he gives a concert at the Great October Hall in Leningrad.
1981 – Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band perform at the New
Bingley Hall in Stafford, England.
1985 – The Temptations' Eddie Kendrick and David Ruffin perform with
Hall & Oates at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. The show is recorded for
a live album release.
1988 – Priscilla Presley holds a press conference to confirm that
Elvis is indeed dead.
1995 – Don Henley marries his first and only wife, Sharon Summerall in
Los Angeles. Wedding guests include Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Billy

2003 – The South Carolina parole board pardons James Brown of all past

after the hearing.

2006 – Hawthorne, California, dedicates a state monument to The Beach
