On reflection, the USA isn't alone as a democracy in making some very
strange choices, particularly when it comes to reelecting questionable
characters. Italy, a country in which I lived for two years, loved and
would possibly move back to (if I had enough money not to work there,
which I admit isn't very likely) insists on repeatedly electing Silvio
Berlusconi (whose comment on Obama's election was that he admired the
man's suntan). Ireland, my homeland, elected Charles Haughey three
times during the 80s, one of the greatest crooks ever to have graced
Irish politics (and that's saying something). It was pretty well
known, but nobody seemed to care. Of course, given the power and
influence of the USA, the consequences of their electorate fishing for
a leader in the toilet are more serious - not just for them, but also
for the world at large.

Maybe the phenomenon says more about the quality of opposition in our
political societies.
