As I suggested in an earlier post, Don, I don't know if it's possible to get behind the mythology and layers of interpretation and invested meaning - I'm not even sure if it's really useful or desirable.
To take a more recent example, could YOU give me an example of something I could read to give me an accurate explanation of how and why the US Civil War happened and what the rights and wrongs of it were? It all depends on where you're coming from, doesn't it? And this is something which happened less than 150 years ago in an era where primitive photography and telegraphy already existed and there was a developed mass media, in the form of newspapers, reporting regularly.
