It allows for more informed discussion. I know very little about it outside what the Bible teaches. I have ordered the book Orn suggested(Amazon booksellers has it for shipping price +.02) While I do not share Ian's opinion on Christianity, I find the morphing of religion interesting and really just looking for something neat to read that doesn't involve current events which frankly scare/anger me.
I get your meaning on the comparison with Civil War books. Although the general consensus(barring a few green-toothed red necks) is keeping the union together was the right thing to do there is an abundance of opinion on if war could have been prevented and slavery ended over time slowly due to economic conditions etc. Although I realize your question was rhetorical and I don't have a recommendation for a book(as you knew I wouldn't) I DO recommend visiting Gettysburg. They have an awesome museum there and guided tour of the battle grounds. Call ahead and request a guide. While I missed out and did the self-guided tour instead I've been told the guys doing the tour are extremely knowledgeable. It's an obsession with some people I understand. http://www.gettysburgmuseum.com/ dj On Mon, May 4, 2009 at 2:29 PM, frantheman <[email protected]> wrote: > > As I suggested in an earlier post, Don, I don't know if it's possible > to get behind the mythology and layers of interpretation and invested > meaning - I'm not even sure if it's really useful or desirable. > > To take a more recent example, could YOU give me an example of > something I could read to give me an accurate explanation of how and > why the US Civil War happened and what the rights and wrongs of it > were?
