In more concrete terms and vectors, I'd aim at things that calm the
savage beast. I'm very much of the mind that fear drives most of our
misbehavior as a species and individually, socially, psychically,
every way. And whatever calms fear and lets reality through is good
for the soul, the spirit, the psyche, the mind and the body.

Meditation is good for this. Deep breathing can bring us down off an
edge. The first stage is to catch ourselves at the edge of that fear
just before it takes hold tightly and bring it all back home.
Centering. Along with these tricks can be taught that a higher
purpose can bring about greater awareness and more control which I
don't think is bending the truth all that much.

Competition is good as well. It can bring a fine focus and
concentration that is meditation-like.

Anything that causes people to find a center within themselves, a core
value that is always there, that which cannot be taken away except in
death. I'd imagine you'd find this quality a lot in extreme sports
always pushing the edge as they do but there are easier and less
dangerous ways of achieving the same thing. Extreme sporting is
looking for the fast track. Not everyone's cup of tea.

But even if everyone started now it would take one to two generations
before results are likely seen. There are some fears so deeply
embedded they will have to die with their host. Only their children
or their children's children will be eligible for escape.
