That's the interesting thing, Slip. The author of John basically had
to write a whole book to produce his answer, namely, his gospel. "I am
the way and the truth and the life ..." etc. An extremely complex,
religious answer, involving neo-platonic philosophy, Jewish religious
history, different Jesus-traditions which had already existed for up
to 70 years by the time he wrote, and a whole theology of divine
incarnation, sacrifice and redemption.

Or, to quote Oscar Wilde, "the truth is rarely pure and never
simple." :-)
