It is inconsistent and full of ambiguity, much of it was written years after the supposed events. There are numerous collections of stories that were deemed worthy of being canonized by the church and accepted as the word of God, though written by many different people. There are some 400 years between the old and new testament in which time empires came and went. The Romans at the time viewed the Emperor as a deity, the Jews were under incredible strain and so alas comes the deliverer, the son of God, a virgin birth etc, but that's a whole bag of worms so.......
