In certain forms of schizophrenia, the part of the brain that dreams and sees in dreams gets turned on while awake and, thus, the hallucinations. They actually can dream while fully awake. Of course, that's not so good if you happen to be having a nightmare at a shopping mall and mistake the cashier for a vampire or some other kind of monsterous dream-thing. People without sight who have been given sight by new operations say that when we see a right angle, it really doesn't LOOK like a right angle.
