Another powerful factor is memory and how memories of the dead stay
with the living plus it is often a shock for children to lose their
parents as they cannot conceive of a "world" without them plus now the
child is "in charge" and on top of the heap- it can be traumatic
leading to an almost super-ego ghost that continues to judge the child
and affect so-called adulthood which actually remains infantile.
