Just a thought, and this may have been brought up already, but you don't have 
compiz or similar running do you? I managed to crash a laptop with 
compiz+mixxx+playing+changing skin (as in, whole machine completely stuck, 
hard boot needed - I blame binary nvidia drivers). Even when not crashing, 
the waveform had a very low framerate. Switch off compiz and it was back to 
being smooth again.
