I converted my 89 GLI last year and the only difference I see is that it takes longer to get cool (30 seconds with R12 to 1 minute with R134a). I can freeze myself inside with either. Looking at all of the foam that is flying at me now, I am sure it would do even better if the heater core was better sealed out of the path of the air.
