Hello Group
There is a great resource on the web for DIY auto A/C info
http://www.aircondition.com/ It is a world class mix of Pros and DIYs with
a few consumers thrown in. There are four sections, two are particularly
relevant Alternative and Questions. Read the archives down the bottom of
each board. Every question you ever had about auto A/C is answered there.
For the record a R134 system is about 75% as efficient as an R12 system
which is about 95% as efficient as an HC system. How well any
particular system cools depends on how well it is working and how much
safety factor there was in the original design. A converted system can
APPEAR to work as well as original as far as the driver feels. When
converting systems the big problems are with the lubricants not the
refringents, although R134 molecules are much smaller than R12 molecules
and will go thru the same size hole much quicker. Unlike home stationary
refrigeration systems (they are sealed) all auto A/C systems, even when
brand new and working perfectly, are leaky. It is just a matter of
degree. Your luck may vary.
Lotsa Luck Eric
