Steve,
This has been my experience. We also converted my cousin's 92 GTI and he
has same the opinion, YMMV. One more thing to consider is that R134 runs
at higher pressures and in an older tired system this could speed up the
chance of failure. On the other hand our Camry, which came from factory
with R134, has the coldest A/C of any car I've ever owned.

That's the first bad opinion of the 134a conversion that I've heard. Has
anyone else had poor experiences with it?

Steve,
If you have a leak get it fixed and don't convert to R134a. I have
converted two of my cars and in my opinion it does not cool the same. R12
will be more expensive, but if there's no leak you won't have to refill for
a long time and it will definitely be cooler.

What's the normal cost of an AC "Checkup"? I have a leak somewhere and
need it patched as well as having my AC re-charged. Also, what is the
"conversion" that I read people doing themselves? I think I'm mechanically
inclined enough to do this, but need to know realistically how long it
takes. (The FL heat is a killer.)
Thanks,
Steve
