Steve, If you have a leak get it fixed and don't convert to R134a. I have converted two of my cars and in my opinion it does not cool the same. R12 will be more expensive, but if there's no leak you won't have to refill for a long time and it will definitely be cooler.

What's the normal cost of an AC "Checkup"? I have a leak somewhere and
need it patched as well as having my AC re-charged. Also, what is the
"conversion" that I read people doing themselves? I think I'm mechanically
inclined enough to do this, but need to know realistically how long it
takes. (The FL heat is a killer.)
