the 87a terminal is a "normally on" output, and when the relay is
activated it switches over to the 87 terminal, and turns off the 87a.

You've got it all right, but it's not necessary to use the brown wire
within the headlight harness, you can just use any ground.  Since I used
self-tapping screws to hold the relays to the fender in the area behind
the driver's side headlight, I just ran short pigtail ground wires from
the relay up to the mounting screw.
