Hmm, now that I think about it, the gas gauge was way low (below the red) but I thought that in all the spirited driving I wasn't paying attention to it and let it go too low. It did sort of surprise me that I had run out of gas so quickly but I had driven 100 spirited miles that night. (how many miles should we get on 3/4 of a tank?) I stopped asap when I saw that. Maybe the gas gauge was trying to warn me...

From your description, I'd guess that your alternator isn't putting out -
carry along a spare regulator/brush assembly, and put it in before bothering
to jump-start the car.  Chances are, you'll find one brush short (worn or
broken).  A quirk of  VW's electrical system is that NO output from the
alternator doesn't give the warning light.  Question: SHOULD you have been
in need of fuel?  The gas guage makes a fair warning for battery draining
down due to no alternator!  HTH!
