Please forgive me for being Naïve.  :-)

Does anyone know why the sensor plates fail, or is it just too much sludge 
build up on the electric contacts within the sensor plate module? Does the K&N 
filter let soo much more air in that the plates get slammed too hard when you 
punch the throttle?

Take off your intake boot and look at your air plate. 
Even with the stock paper filter I bet your airplate
is covered in motor oil from the engine crankcase
breather.  The slight bit of K&N oil that mixes with
the sludge that's already there won't contribute to
the air plate dying.  Besides, A2 cars like ours don't
even have mass airflow sensors.  Those didn't come
about till the Vr6 motor.
