I tried a K&N in an '89 Jetta GL. When I put it in I also cleaned the whole
intake tract to the throttle body. After about 6 months I did the same again.
The stuff I cleaned from the intake tract felt far more gritty between my
fingers. I ran it for another 3 months, found more grit. Then I went back to
paper. Next time I replaced the filter there was no grit. This was in
California. I have an Amsoil (oiled foam) filter to experiment with in my
current car once I put in the 2L block.

I also remember the K&N being oiled thin cotton, not oiled foam. I have also
seen experimental data indicating that K&N did not have a measureably lower
pressure drop across the filter element that a paper one did. No pressure drop
difference means no flow difference. I cannot remember the source for this but
it was on the net somewhere.

Just my 2.45623973 cents,
JV
