Generally how many auto-x and track events does it take to wipe out a set of
springs? Or how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie
pop? I am basically learning how to drive this season and will work more
car stuff over the winter.

I can run STS during SCCA sponsored events, but many of the local clubs have
their own "regional" classes that are similar but not exactly like SCCA. At
regional events I am somewhere between stock and "improved". If I put my
old small bumpers back on I guess I could be totally legal for stock class
which usually has the most exciting competition. I know that to be
competitive in DSP you need something other than a MK2 VW. Subaru 2.5L RS
and VR6 MK3 GTi comes to mind when thinking about how I will get my butt
kicked there.

You ought to run in STS, your car will probably be a lot more competetive
there. Go for 2.5 deg. of camber (dont worry about wear issues... if your
driving is at all like mine you'll wear your tires MORE evenly with all that
camber) and get a rear bar. As far as upgrades from where you're at right
now, you also might want to look into some stiffer linear-rate springs
instead of the progressive-rate H&R's. Something to think about in 6 months
when you once again feel like your car handles like crap, even though it's
still 10 times better than it used to be. :)
