I'm with Josh on this one. The closest thing to an A2 16v out there
today isn't built by VW. It's a Mini. That chassis is stupid stiff.
The R32 is a nice ride, but it's too heavy and the AWD is too much
like FWD to compete with the cheaper. . . err. . . less expensive WRX.
Off Topic: But speaking of light, nice handling cars, I picked up a
Miata for dirt a month ago and I have to say it's a fun little car to
drive while I contemplate rebuilding the Jetta's engine. (First
rebuild for me.)

The R32 is definately NOT a replacement for the A2
16v. The 16v is a car with decent power, but a great
feeling chassis and good handling and brakes.
None of the new Mk4 cars fill those shoes, the 337
included. The 337 has good brakes and decent power,
but handles like a pig.
The R32 is way too expensive, overweight and
underperforming for the market sector it's entering.
Also, I'm not sure how accepting the public will be of
a $30,000 hatchback.
For the cash, the R32 is going to get spanked
performance wise by the Mitsu Lancer Evo 8 and the WRX
Sti. Oh, and the awd systems in both of those cars
work better.

- Hey, I love the R32, but how do you see it as a
replacement for the A2 16V?
This thing's thirty thousand dollars!!! To me,
it's in a different
category. It's more in the WRX category.
Don't you think that the GTI 337 and the upcoming
limited edition GTI are
better "successors" to the A2 16V?
By the way, my friend works at the local VW/Audi
research center. Currently
they have 3 R32's, 3 limited edition GTI's, and a
couple of TT's with the VR6
and dual clutch system. Yes, he gets to drive all
of them.
