I agree with you guys, 30k is just too much for that level of performance,
VW should get away from the bells and whistles and make a more no frills,
light, great handling car. we know they can do it. the hell with the
options and the luxury, they need to get back to fun to drive. I think
right now there is some value in e36 M3's. you can get an excellent example
98 or 99 with 30-65k on for around 20-22 for the 98 and 25 or so for the 99.
I bought a 98 a couple of months ago that is in awesome shape, one owner,
new h&r coilovers, new SO3's, great aftermarket stereo, the rare bmw
lightweight forged wheels, and a bunch of other goodies for 21.5k.

I lost my interest in later GTis and Golfs somewhere around 1992. I've
remained faithful to my A2 Golf 16V, Corrado G60, and 81 VW Truck. Its
amusing to drive to work with the oldest car in the lot. However, I did buy
my wife a Jetta MKIII a couple years back.

The newer cars lost an intangible and undescribable character that I thought
was present in the older cars. Even though they are crude by today's
standards, the older generation cars are just plain fun to drive.

With the median average new car price hovering around $35k, I've decided to
keep my existing cars and place all of my "new car" funds into my retirement
account. ;)
