Hmm..
How about the MLUG compiling a nice how to for beginners? We could then
send it to pc stores (I know we're all thinking of the same PC store,
but I won't mention it here for the sake of advertizing) and they could
give a copy to every client who purchases a Linux Box. Maybe even
distribute free fliers to customers (have a mini stand with fliers and a
"take one" stand.)
The how to itself would then direct people towards the MLUG for support
etc...

I tend to disagree. The support questions you get from novices and
total beginners are the same you would get both from a windows camp as
well as the linux camp. They are clueless anyway. The worst people to
support are people who think they know enough in Windows and that are
capable of doing the switch, expecting the same things in Windows at
the touch of a button.
I feel that this list is should be most supportive to these people
which want that extra more out of a PC and are ready to do it
themselves rather than asking the nearest IT guy (read me) for help on
fixing stuff.

Wow, wow, chill out! Hehe, no flames on this list!
Raphael, I do agree that your idea is good. But, as you said, people
just want a computer that works. "People" in this sense refers to
type 0 and 1 users - novices and total beginners and as I said, they
will have no problem with Linux

I have suggested this approach at the latest (and only) MLUG meeting
but received harsh criticism about the way of advocating Linux for
Joe User. People aren't interested in installing Linux. They are NOT
even interested in installing Windows. They just want a computer
that works.
I have had enough !!

I'm sorry to butt in but I think its quite useless complaining
between the
same people....I'm not too sure if anyone here will spot out a decent
solution.
I'm quite in favour of Linux, even tough I'm a beginner (as most of
us are),
and found lots of trouble. So..
I agree totally with trying to put Linux on the Maltese PCs. So why
don't
you (meaning the Linux Group) try to find a computer store who will
start
distributing Linux instead of Windows and maybe one of you guys
(this goes
to the Geeks) go and give a lecture or two the new fellows! Maybe
this kick
start it!!

Subject: [LINUX.ORG.MT] The 6 types of computer users
There are 6 types of computer users
5 - UBER GEEKS
4 - Geniuses
3 - Experts
2 - Advanced users
1 - Novices
0 - Total Beginners
Uber Geeks find Linux easy to use because they're geeks. Geniuses also
find Linux easy because they're geniuses.
Total Beginners and Novices find Linux easy because they don't do
anything with it except use programs which come installed with the
system. I'm quite sure a monkey can be trained to launch
openoffice.org.
The problem lies in 2 and 3. Advanced users and Experts aren't as
"litterate" as Geniuses and Uber Geeks, however, they would like to do
more stuff then novices and total beginners. So, they'd want to
install
programs, configure stuff, etc.. etc.. Which is difficult. I think
many
budding computer students (such as myself) fall into these two
categories. Most computer students simply abandon Linux and use
Windows,
maybe until they're geniuses/uber geeks. Very few keep trying ad
nauseum.
Just my 2c
