Then in the example I highlighted, "use" would be correct I think. Often
"use" can be used in place of the even uglier "utilize" and "utilization",

There's a subtle difference in meaning. "Usage" is about the way something
is used, rather than the fact of its being used.

 

In English, there was, usually, a good reason for more than one word to
exist with generally similar meaning. There would be a nuance (English
word?? Another strength of English - if we have no suitable word, we'll
borrow one) of meaning.
