At work I intentionally did something, as a
social experiment, to see how it could work out. I
put the whole unit of residents on interaction
restriction. This isn't a new consequence at the
facility. I did so, due to the females on the unit
were targeting each other. Some wanted to kill other
residents. Some threatened to punch others, etc...
The staff were having a rough time as well handling
these events. So, what I did that was different, is I
continued the interaction restriction for over seven
days. They couldn't verbally and nonverbally interact
with each other. It was going on for a long time. We
were into the ninth day, and I planned out the night
before that I would let it continue until the
residents were able to carry this consequence out
very, very well or until staff came up to me and said
they thought it should be over. Either way, it would
help refocus the unit. Many things happened that
turned out for the best. First, staff started talking
to each other about how this should end. Then on the
ninth day a staff member came up to me, and said how
she thought the interaction restriction needs to end.
She said, "What good is it doing going on this long
anyways? We are only holding the residents back." I
said to her, "Your 100% right. I'm with you on this.
I was waiting for either the residents to do the
consequence very well or one of the staff to come up
to me and say they wanted it stopped."
You see I came up with the consequence, and I
further told the staff that I didn't want staff that
just follow orders. I want staff that if they really
believe something is not going on correctly or it
isn't helping out the unit, then I want staff to come
up to me and speak their mind. I don't want robots.
Secondly what this did, is it took the heat off the
staff and onto me. I came up with the consequence,
and now the residents took their negativity off the
staff and each other and refocused it on me. Also, as
soon as I talked with this staff that wanted it to
stop, I immediately went out and let the residents
know that staff, and I named some names, convinced me
that the interaction restriction should me lifted and
ended. I said, I think these staff are right, and it
is no longer. Now these staff, in the eyes of the
residents were staff trying to help them out. More
positive interactions have been going on for some days
now, so far.
I also did tell that staff that came up to me and
wanted the consequence to end, that I didn't want
staff that just follow authority no matter what is
going on. Authority is no something to follow
blindly.

I don't watch all the political debates, but the
Republican debate was on the other day and I wanted to
see what they were discussing. I'm not pointing out
the political party so much, at least I don't think
so, I'd imagine the same is being debated with the
Democratic party, too. If not, somebody let me know.
Anyways, for over 30 minutes since I started watching
the debate, all's they talked about was the economy
and how they were going to make it better. For over
30 minutes... why don't we just get a CEO in charge of
this country. It's all about business anyways.
I agree, we do need to seek a higher quality ways
to live together socially. This is why I think
intellectual issues stem into social issues
eventually. So, how and what we intellectualize is
some of the weather that rains and sunshines upon
society.

some good points, thanks.
