Hi Bo, all, > Steve: >> I don't think there is such a thing as biology's intelligence. To >> talk about intellect in animals is not what people usually mean by >> intellectual and is certainly not how Pirsig uses the term in the >> MOQ.
Bo: > You really are difficult. Aren't there intelligent - smart - animals? Steve: Good point. We certainly do talk about certain animals being smarter than others. But I don't think that animals think as Pirsig defines thinking as symbol manipulation. I think most scientists believe that animal behavior that looks like thinking can be explained by conditioning rather than abstract thought. It's an interesting topic, and I welcome hearing from anyone who has any insight into animal cognition. If animals do participate in intellectual patterns as Pirsig defines them it would be a problem for the MOQ as Bo says. But I don't think animals manipulate symbols any more than a baby is manipulating symbols when it learns that certain behaviors elicit desired responses from mom and dad. > Steve: >> You want to define each level as having one particular value while >> I think of the levels as types of patterns of value and I think this >> is how Pirsig defined the levels. This is explains why we see the >> SOL differently. To me (and I think for Pirsig), Quality is the same >> on all levels, there are just diferent types of patterns and one >> Value. > > I think Christoffer answered this splendidly. Steve: Can you quote him for me? > Steve: >> By the way, in the Bo version of the MOQ, the biological level's >> value is life and the intellectual level's value is the S/O >> distinction. What are the inorganic and social level's values? > Bo: > There is only one MOQ. Steve: You must see that you are saying something different than Pirsig especially when you go so far as to add a level.
