Wow gav, I like it ... emergence is the MoQ metaphor I have been using for evolution for quite some time. The telos as mythological narrative is the best I have come up with so far too. A telos towards betterness (relative betterness / advantage anyway, and relative to local / temporary conditions).
The random element of mutation explains just that ... the random mutations ... but of course it never was an explanation of the whole of evolution ... except for those wanting to "reduce" it to some crass statement. Who wants "greedy" reductionism anyway. ie the telos IS the emergent process ... explains why it appears "as if" there were some mythical guiding hand ... when in any objective sense there isn't one ... but objectivism is over-rated anyway, so who cares ? Hofstader has this covered for me and Dennett's "engineering" & "cranes" metaphors are the best neo-Darwinian take I have found. MoQ is a pretty good synthesis of these IMHO (plus MacIntyre cemented the effect of the mythological narrative for me, after DMB sowed that seed for me ... before MacIntyre lurched off down the "Christian / religous" avenue anyway.) 'course I'm talking neo-Darwinian evolution in memetic (socio-cultural-intellectual sense) as well as genetic (physio-biological) sense. All Pirsig did "wrong" was choose not to explain this all in prevailing philosophological terms, but in rhetorical writing. His perogative. Our gain.
