Matt said to dmb:
I'm willing to concede, especially after this, that I don't think I understood
your point. And that I didn't recognize you as reasserting a point you've
continually made, that I've undervalued. ...It would appear that you think I'm
denying the existence of the Dynamic/static distinction, or something similar.
I'm not sure why, however, as I take it one doesn't have to tell a story about
the evolution of _that particular distinction_ every time one is telling a
story, and one can even take that distinction as the operative dynamic, as it
were. I was telling a story that I wanted to be useful to many different kinds
of audiences, not an essay in Pirsigology.

dmb says:
Sure, a guy can't include everything. That's why the sin of omission usually
strikes me as a bogus form of criticism. But I think you left out the most
important stuff. You just ought not tell a story about Socrates, Plato, Pirsig
the Sophists without that, even if Rorty's in it too. The whole quest for
Quality narrative in ZAMM reaches its climax in the relations between these
people. It's the heart of the book and the center of his thought. You can't
leave THAT out of such a story.
I'm just saying the essay would ring truer if it recognized these things.
It's just an opinion. If you think it has no merit then just forget it.
