DMB said: Sure, a guy can't include everything. That's why the sin of omission usually strikes me as a bogus form of criticism. But I think you left out the most important stuff. You just ought not tell a story about Socrates, Plato, Pirsig the Sophists without that, even if Rorty's in it too. The whole quest for Quality narrative in ZAMM reaches its climax in the relations between these people. It's the heart of the book and the center of his thought. You can't leave THAT out of such a story. I'm just saying the essay would ring truer if it recognized these things. It's just an opinion. If you think it has no merit then just forget it.
Matt: It's not that I don't think it doesn't have merit, it's just that I get the feeling you only want people to talk about one thing (which is no doubt rich coming from me). I was taking a different perspective than the one Pirsig takes. If I was telling Pirsig's story of the course of intellectual evolution, or a story about Pirsig, I might be hearing what you're hearing better. But I was trying to broaden perspectives, not narrow down on a single problem. My suspicion is simply that "the most important stuff" I missed is mainly kinds of things that can simply be added, either by a longer story or parallel stories. I don't see how mine precludes "important stuff." I think many different stories about Socrates, Plato, Pirsig, and the Sophists can be told, and all be useful to discussion of Pirsig and philosophy. I think proliferation is a good thing for study of Pirsig. Matt _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail® has ever-growing storage!
