Matt replied: It's not that I don't think it doesn't have merit, it's just that I get the feeling you only want people to talk about one thing (which is no doubt rich coming from me). ...My suspicion is simply that "the most important stuff" I missed is mainly kinds of things that can simply be added, either by a longer story or parallel stories. I don't see how mine precludes "important stuff." I think many different stories... dmb says:Let me put it this way. I didn't see Pirsig in your story. Didn't really see Plato or Socrates in it either, actually. Funny thing is, I'd just finished a 15 page term paper comparing Plato's Good and Pirsig's Quality. (Among other things, we read the Republic, where the allegory of the cave serves as one of three analogies for the Good.) So I was just covering the same ground for my Plato class. It was no trick at all to see that both terms are central in their own context. It could just be a reflection of the reading list for this particular course and there is a ton of Plato I haven't read but it's my impression that you can tell a story about Plato without including the Good. Same with Pirsig and his Quality. They'd both tell you their central term refers to the source and substance of everything. If they were excluded, I wouldn't know how to say anything of any substance about either of them. Also, if my Professor was right, drawing a line between Socrates and Plato involves many interpretive complexities. Basically, one has to be a Plato scholar, a Classicist of some kind in order to draw such lines. It's way too tricky for me, anyway. Are you relying on anyone in particular there? Just curious. _________________________________________________________________ HotmailĀ® goes with you. http://windowslive.com/Tutorial/Hotmail/Mobile?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Tutorial_Mobile1_052009 Moq_Discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
