Marsha,
I have an inkling of what you are talking about since I get something
similar.  Sometimes I can induce it if I remember the feeling.  This
feeling is one of extreme clarity and extreme relief and joy.  If I do
not question it, it can last.  However, I do not feel like doing much
else at that point except staring at things.  Perhaps its a state of mind
as you suggest, that is no thoughts just awareness.  However, not that
I am religious or anything, but I feel like everything makes sense even
though I'm not really thinking.  Like you say, it is not something I chase
like a drink or drug, but something that I know is there.

OK so much for my idiosyncrasies, back to figuring IT out...

Mark

xacto,

Oh what the heck, if you can't be honest enough to risk your credibility now
and then, why bother to speak? I accept your duh.
