That is, for the foundations of emotions to occur, a certain neuro-physiological complexity MUST be present. SUM: All biological patterns are not created equal. In this view, an amoeba would have no foundation whatesoever to experience "emotion", but a dog or dolphin or human would. The foundation begins here. <snip> Hi Arlo and All, I want to discuss evolution in DQ/SQ terms. Imho evolution is an hierarchical order in existence. Each level has its proper DQ. At the inorganic level imho the DQ is gravity. One level evolves the SQ inorganic level. At the next level, an organic level, DQ is instinct (self-movement) and two more levels evolve. Instinct is a DQ movement in DQ gravity. The first organic level, SQ life, occurs with the self-reproduction of one cell splitting itself into two identical cells creating two independent organisms. The next organic level life occurs when an egg-cell wall is penetrated by a sperm cell and the two cells unite creating a multi-cell organism by reproduction as Persig noted. So far gravity and instinct are DQ in three SQ levels in evolution. In the most complex grav-instinct level DQ consciousness evolves creating 4 more levels. To repeat imho evolution is an order in existence. To ask how it comes about or its cause is futile. Imho the first evolution in consciousness is DQ only, the emotional level. It never advances to a configuration which we may describe as SQ. Emotions are always dynamic and undefined. The next evolution in consciousness is the intellectual level S/O. At the intellectual level consciousness is identified as DQ/SQ. Esoteric literature identifies two further levels in consciousness only evolution: higher emotional, and higher intellectual levels. I do not have any knowledge of a definition of these two levels except to note that through history heroes have manifested inexplicably beyond the normal order of things.
