I think that is a good answer.

In fact: (some things are better than others) might be a species of (it is 
better to be than not to be).

perhaps (it is better to be than not to be) is the primal pattern.

And (it is better to be than not to be) is equivalent to or perhaps leads to 
(it 
is better to be a pattern than not to be a pattern).

so that:

(it is better to be than not to be) ->

(it is better to be this than to be that) ->

(some things are better than others) ... and so on, a process of abstraction 
towards higher levels of quality.
