Platt, This point of Pirsig's you posted isn't well understood, because people have lost the deep understanding of what it meant to be connected to each other and the land: to be born, live and die in the bosom of a family, tribe and place. The beckoning genie of materialism has misled men so far out of their natural minds, that they can't even grasp what Pirsig is saying here.
