But it was the values vaccuum following the disapointment in failed idealism which died with the "German betrayal of world society" which brought civilization around to concentrate on cash values. Nature abhors a vaccuum, and when one demon is cast out, 7 more come rushing in to take its place. Thus was American Pragmatism boosted in the eyes of the world with a philosophical underpinning to what amounted to basic greedy selfishness. And yes, depressing indeed.
