Yes, only humans have intellect, and only humans can respond to the creative
force of DQ to affect the evolution of life. Can a tribe, a state or a church
respond to DQ? I don't see how.
John:
But if you're trying to make the point that humans stand outside the four
categories, I sure can't go there. And I'm an MoQ heretic?

Pirsig says human beings are a composite of all four static levels PLUS the
ability to respond to DQ. It's that ability along with intellectual capacity
that makes them a separate category. "But the Metaphysics of Quality also says
that Dynamic Quality-the value-force that chooses an elegant mathematical
solution to a laborious one, or a brilliant experiment over a confusing,
inconclusive one-is another matter altogether." (Lila, 29) I don't think
atoms, possums, or cultures can recognize a "value-force" that would help them
choose elegance or brilliance. But individual humans can, and some exceptional
ones, like Pirsig, contribute to the evolution of life with new knowledge. .
No, you're not an MOQ heretic. No one except Pirsig knows the MOQ for sure, and
even he sometimes wavers between one interpretation or another. Fortunately the
MOQ has yet to attain a set-in-stone static meaning. It's still a work in
progress as Pirsig intended, open to Dynamic influence.
