Hi Craig, This would bring in the powers of inductive and deductive reasoning. For we can deduce things that are outside of our experience, such as life on other planets. As humans we have one mode of creating patterns, iron filings are a good example of pattern creation when the conform to a magnetic field. The field is not really those patterns, but that is how the iron presents them.
In your final two sentences I believe you are on the right path towards understanding Pirsig. That is the pattern of matter is "produced" by us humans. As such it is a ghost of the intellect. Instead of pattern of matter, I could also say: Our "awareness" of matter. For there is far more to it than the patterns we form, just like there is more to magnetic fields than the patterns which iron filings form. Remember that inductive and deductive reasoning are creative powers, and therefore create truths, not find them.
