I seem to remember a story from my childhood, one about a boy who
alerted his fellow townspeople to the presence of a wolf, when in fact
no wolf was in the vicinity. The townspeople would get all wound up and
go looking for the wolf, only to find nothing. The boy found this to be
great sport, and did it often. But the townspeople eventually got wise
to his shenanigans, and one day, when a real wolf actually did show up,
they ignored his cries for help, and the wolf ate him.
But I don't see how this could possibly apply to the situation at hand.
