Mark,
Windows Codecs or basically DLLs (under Win32) that have a pre-defined
interface. Codec is a concatination of the words COder/DECoder, so they can
be used to encode/decode audio streams (there are also video codecs, which
are based on the
same principle, but for encode/decode video stream). Under windows, the
Fraunhofer MP3 encoder/decoder is implemented as
Windows Audio codec.
