The prominent display of weapons by police is a calculated intimidation
tactic.
I have objected for years to the practice of police wearing holstered guns in
the schools when they are making D.A.R.E. presentations. Bringing a weapon
into a school is grounds for expulsion. Police ought to show respect for the
rules, and for the efforts of school staff to create a non-violent, safe
atmosphere for the kids. Instead, they are giving students a message that
police are "above the law". And, of course, the kids are fascinated by their
guns.
Last time I complained I was told that it is a security risk for D.A.R.E.
officers to leave their guns in their squad cars when entering the schools,
or that they don't want to be unarmed in case of an emergency call. But I
think if there really was a will to keep police weapons out of the schools,
some accommodations could be made; perhaps the cops could make D.A.R.E.
presentations when they're off-duty and not responsible for carrying a weapon.
