You know I was going to be all done with this as I thought I had expressed my thoughts clearly, but Jordan Kushner's post is really just too much.

Why is it that when people disagree about the issue of an anti-war resolution that the people who favor it demonize those who oppose it and feel free to infer nearly every imaginable nefarious motive for it.

[Kushner writes:] I think David's post is pretty revealing about the point of view of those who claim to oppose war, while also opposing a local anti-war resolution. This view expresses opposition to war, but ultimately says that the war is not an important issue.

This is simply an outrageous and ridiculous statement. Excuse me Jordan but you don't know me well enough to make such a comment. To me the prospect of a war with a Iraq is a HUGELY important issue.

I am opposed to it. Check out the sign in my front yard. I have marched here in MN against the war. At great expense of time and money I went to Washington DC last month to protest the war. Yet you feel you know me (and all others who share my views) well enough to say "This view says, 'War is wrong, (but) don't let the issue cause us any inconvenience.'"

Let me quote Brauer; BUNK, BUNK, BUNK, BUNK!

One's option about a local anti-war resolution is not a litmus test for whether or not they TRULY oppose a war. Please, please try to consider the fact that I plainly and simply don't believe that such a resolution falls within the jurisdiction of the Mpls city council. And I don't believe the city council should spend its time debating such issues. One can make wide ranging arguments that every issue that comes before our state and federal governments affects us at the city level. But that doesn't mean the city council should inject itself into these situations. I mean, what would be off the table? We elect people at the state and federal levels to make decisions for us at those levels.

I had to laugh when I factitiously suggested that using this argument one could make a case for taking this issue to the school board and water conservation districts, but someone actually thought that was a good idea! (to anyone on those boards, please forgive me!)

To those who favor an anti-war resolution I say, "great." Make your arguments. Put forward your ideas and beliefs. Let your voice be heard. But when things don't go your way, please don't resort to attacking the character and motives of people who disagree with you. Don't become so convinced of the rightness of your opinions that you can't even imagine that there is a different and perhaps every bit as legitimate opposing view. When you do that you actually start to sound like George Bush and, you know, that's how wars get started.
