I have posted on this issue in the past in the same vain as Paul Lohman -
strongly opposed to the war, but feel it is not within the Council's
jurisdiction. Jordan Kushner suggested in his post that there could not be
much harm that would come from dealing with this issue at the City level.
There has already been an example showing that this is not the case. Like
it or not, the City is at the mercy of a Republican controlled state
government that is in the process of taking a big chunk out of our LGA
budget. We have another four years to live with this Republican
administration and I think it is in the City's best interest to demonstrate
that they are taking seriously their role as City administrators and
focusing their time and effort on City business. On his new radio show this
week, Governor Pawlenty has already slapped the St. Paul City Council for
taking up the antiwar issue:

"And without betraying a drop of sarcasm, Pawlenty took a shot at the
antiwar resolution Benanav introduced this week. 'We're glad that the St.
Paul City Council is keeping your focus right on those bread-and-butter city
issues,' the governor said."

I for one am pleased that he cannot take the same shot at Minneapolis.
