Out in Denver they have had significant development in the area of the new Coors Field, the baseball stadium. The area is called LoDo (Lower Downtown). Much of the development is housing although I don't think they have as much downtown housing as Minneapolis does. I think the Rapid Park site could boost downtown housing as it adds to an area that is already developing. It's easier to make a development arguement for baseball with 80-some dates a year than it is for football which only has 10. Still, I don't understand why we spend public money to build a facility for an industry that has tons of money. It makes even less sense to spend public money to relocate a business from Minneapolis to any place else in the state (or from St. Paul to any place else in the state). That would be a negative to downtown Minneapolis as it would mean a couple of million people a year would not come as otherwise would. That mistake was made once when Excel Center was built with public money to compete with the publicly owned Target Center. There may not be enough business for both facilities and they spend a ton of money to win the competition between the 2 facilities. Would a baseball stadium anywhere in the metro area be additional compitition for Target Center and/or Excel? The 3 or 4 hundred million of public money that the county board proposes to spend on a stadium at Rapid Park seems like a ton of money. What benefits do we get besides a baseball team named "Minnesota"? We need to see something that tells us the economic benefits, and not just the jobs for a couple of years while the thing is being built.
