Steve Sumner: Phyllis Kahn has demonstrated two things this week:
The first is that she has taken her constituency for granted. She
has been spending her summer campaigning in another part of the city, while being
absent from local events in her home community. Second, Phyllis revealed a few major
flaws in her character. The first has to do with her disrespect for the rule of law.
  The possibly more
revealing is her disrespect of the voting population. Her desire to remove
literature with an alternative voice can only mean that she felt that the voters could
not be trusted to make a decision based on all of the facts. The Republican Party in
Senate District 59B is confident that when the voters are given all of the facts, they
will choose Amanda Hutchins to unseat Phyllis Kahn this fall.

Peter Schmitz: Good post, Steve. But keep in mind that Phyllis Kahn has been
demonstrating her dis-respect for the democratic process for at least the past three
years, most notably with her lawsuit to overturn the 2001 Mpls. City Council elections
where two candidates from the Green Party defeated a powerful encumbant (former City
Council President Jackie Cherryhomes) as well as an endorsed party faithful (Dean
Kallenbach) from the DFL. As far as I know, local republicans have not challenged
this egregious use of the courts (perhaps because their own party is guilty of
mis-using the judicial system to steal a Presidential election.

Becki Smith, from the Green Party, is also running against Representative Kahn. Given
the Republican Party's current war against Minneapolis (and Saint Paul as well),
voters in Kahn's district would do well to vote for Smith.

As for the DFL Party, they could do themselves a big favor by asking Kahn to give up
her seat.
