First, Mr. Sumner, pocket your obfuscations. Rep. Kahn has spent the better
part of twenty years, and a good part of the past few weeks, door knocking
in SD59. She's not just a neighbor, but a good friend, of most of the
people in SE Minneapolis. Given that my relationship with her district
dates back to '70 I'm very happy with the service she provides at the
legislature.

Second, though Phyllis could have chosen a better method to do opposition
research than lifting a flyer (and at this point there are no facts to
suggest she was doing more) that's really all it was, opposition research.
If the GOP candidate is so concerned about losing a flyer, then perhaps
there are bigger problems for the GOP than you let on.

Third, Mr. Schmitz, I lived, until recently, in a part of Northeast
Minneapolis that did not have representation on the Council as a result of
redistricting. I don't know what the Court's decision will be, and I'll be
happy either way, but I'm glad that Phyllis raised the issue rather than
letting the City Council take care of those decisions. Its separation of
powers and it must be exercised in these instances. Perhaps you should stop
by the Surdyks cheese shop later today.

Fourth, Minnesota is a better place with Phyllis Kahn in St. Paul than
without. As for the Northeast side, I plan on casting a vote for Diane
Loeffler to fill Rep. Biernat's seat. I've only lived Northeast for a few
short years, but in that time Diane has won my support over and over again
by being active in the community and showing character and imagination in
abundance.

Lastly, Mr. list serve cop, now that the DFL, Greens and GOP have had an
opportunity to lob grenades at each other, perhaps we should discuss a
return to issue debate.

I would appreciate an opinion. As for Mr. Sumner and Mr. Schmitz, I've
lived a lot of places, met a lot of politicians. The vigor and character of
the DFL is one of the things that attracted me back to Minnesota. Having
lived in two GOP states, I can assure you that neither Gov. Pawlenty nor the
mosquitoes brought me home.

Steve Sumner: Phyllis Kahn has demonstrated two things this week:
The first is that she has taken her constituency for granted. She
has been spending her summer campaigning in another part of the city, while
being absent from local events in her home community. Second, Phyllis
revealed a few major flaws in her character. The first has to do with her
disrespect for the rule of law. The possibly more
revealing is her disrespect of the voting population. Her desire to remove
literature with an alternative voice can only mean that she felt that the
voters could not be trusted to make a decision based on all of the facts.
The Republican Party in Senate District 59B is confident that when the
voters are given all of the facts, they will choose Amanda Hutchins to
unseat Phyllis Kahn this fall.

Peter: Good post, Steve. But keep in mind that Phyllis Kahn has been
demonstrating her dis-respect for the democratic process for at least the
past three years, most notably with her lawsuit to overturn the 2001 Mpls.
City Council elections where two candidates from the Green Party defeated a
powerful encumbant (former City Council President Jackie Cherryhomes) as
well as an endorsed party faithful (Dean Kallenbach) from the DFL. As far
as I know, local republicans have not challenged this egregious use of the
courts (perhaps because their own party is guilty of mis-using the judicial
system to steal a Presidential election.

Becki Smith, from the Green Party, is also running against Representative
Kahn. Given the Republican Party's current war against Minneapolis (and
Saint Paul as well), voters in Kahn's district would do well to vote for
Smith.

As for the DFL Party, they could do themselves a big favor by asking Kahn to
give up her seat.
